Somewhere between about 3-8 months old Pomeranians go through a hair coat change that is lovingly referred to as the “Pom Puppy Uglies” This is when they shed their baby hair fluff and get in their adult hair. Puppies tend to look straggly or shaggy. They may look leggy and disproportionate. They might look awkward and be clumsy. Don’t worry it is absolutely normal! This is their adolescent stage and their hormones are raging.
The puppy is experiencing a change similar to what teenage girls and boys do during puberty. By the time the pup is between 9-18 months old he or she will have a thick full coat again which is usually even fuller and more fluffy than before!
If the coat change is distressing to you watching your cute puppy who was once a bundle of fluff puppy turn into something hardly identifiable as a Pomeranian then this is a great stage in life for your Pomeranian to learn to wear dog “clothes”. There are so many choices from dresses and skirts to tee shirts and leather jackets. Dog clothes work the best for Pomeranians at this stage in life because their hair is shorter and lays better under clothes. It’s fun to shop for new outfits and your puppy can be just as fashionable as you!
Some Poms just fly through the “uglies” and you will hardly notice a change (usually during winter months) but most will go through the uglies. Now is the time to take some photos of the “ugly duckling” and wait for the “swan” to appear!
This is one of our dogs at various stages in life.

If you have some great before and after photos of your Pom going through the “Pom puppy uglies” we would love to feature them here!
Adult Poms may also have a similar coat change at various times in their lives. If you don’t spay your female you can expect her to “blow” her coat by shedding her undercoat and much of her top coat after her heat cycles and especially after having puppies when her hormones change.
