Getting ready to bring your new puppy home.
Adding a new puppy to your family can be one of the most rewarding experiences you will have. Most new owners have lots of questions about what they should know and what they should buy before bringing their new bundle of joy home.
We have complied a list of important information along with products we use or recommend to make the process of bringing home baby a little easier. The product links will take you to Amazon to make shopping a breeze.
Puppy Proofing your home
Before your puppy comes home prepare a safe and friendly environment by making sure your house is “puppy proofed”. This is similar to how you would “child proof” a home. Look at your house from a puppy’s point of view and remove any hazardous items. Make sure all poisonous household items are securely stored out of puppy’s reach especially indoor poisonous plants. Keep all electrical cords out of reach of teething puppies. Just one bite on an electrical cord can kill a small puppy. It is best to add cord covers to essential cords to help prevent chewing. But never leave a puppy with a cord in reach to chew long term. Place safety gates across stairs, balcony’s or unsafe areas.
If you use a lawn care service, verify they only use pet safe products on your grass. Check the outdoor poisonous plant guide from US Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and walk around your yard to make sure you don’t have any toxic plants in reach. If you have poisonous plants in your yard, fence them off or remove them from your landscape.
Sleeping
Have a place designated for your puppy to sleep, eat and potty. Puppies need to be put in a safe place when you are not able to directly supervise them. Never leave a young pomeranian puppy outside in your yard unsupervised. Tiny puppies can fit through the smallest of spaces in a fence and be lost or stolen.
We find the best option for new puppies is to be in a version of a puppy play pen where your puppy has it’s bed, food and water along with a puppy potty pad. There are many versions of puppies play pens available to fit a variety of homes.
The puppy play pen can be the main space your puppy is confined to while you are not immediately available to supervise. We do not advise young puppies being left free to rome the entire home unattended until they are older. This will make potty training much more challenging. Additionally it is very difficult to completely puppy proof an entire home. Having a comfortable contained place for puppy to stay is much safer.
If you don’t want to keep your puppy in a play pen you can use a small room such as a bathroom or laundry room.
Using a play pen for your puppy makes it possible for you to leave your puppy while you are at work, tending to family duties or overnight while you sleep. Your puppy can eat, drink, sleep, play and potty comfortably on it’s own.
While growing up in our home your puppy has learned how to use puppy potty pads so it is already familiar with this system.

Here are a few example options of products to use for the modified crate training system.
Richell Expandable Pet Crate with floor tray

wire folding playpen
(set up in a rectangle shape)
Folding puppy playpens can provide a safe and portable area for your puppy and can be set up in multiple configurations both indoor and out and are great for travel.

Puppies like to feel snuggly and warm when they sleep. A dog is a natural den animal so a soft cuddle bed will help your puppy feel secure.

We like to use a soft fluffy fleece blanket on top of the bed so puppies can dig around and get their bed just right for sleeping. The fleece throw can also be easily washed and will help prevent a puppy from chewing on their cuddle bed.

Play
Pomeranian Puppies love to play. Toys and play can help you bond with your new puppy. Having an abundant supply of toys will also give your puppy something to do while you are otherwise occupied. Pomeranians tend to be sound driven so they love toys that make noise. There are so many fun toys options. Get a variety for your puppy to choose from.
Crinkly toys,

and interactive squeaky toys are fun for both you and your Pom.

Having different textures and shapes of chew toys is also important for discovery and to satisfy the need to chew.

Examine toys regularly to make sure they are not damaged. Stuffed toys can become damaged if they get over chewed and puppies can pull out the inside fluffies and eat them. Toys that can fit entirely in a puppy’s mouth can be a choking hazard and should not be used.
Dog toy baskets are not just a place to store puppy toy but also a game. Just like human toddlers, puppies find it more fun to pull out all the toys than to put them all away. It doubles as a fun hide and seek spot too.

If your yard is not fenced tightly enough to contain a tiny Pomeranian puppy you may want to consider buying a sturdy playpen for your yard. You can add multiple panels together to make a large enough size to play with your puppy or work on potty training.

Potty Training
Consistency is key to having a well trained puppy. There are so many options when it comes to potty training. We have an entire page dedicated to answering potty training questions. Check out our POTTY TRAINING page
Leash Training
Pomeranian puppies are very small and somewhat fragile. We recommend only using a harness with a leash when teaching your puppy to walk on a leash. Collars can put undo stress on their tiny airway structures. Until your puppy is older and well trained to understand what you are asking when on a leash it is best to stick to a harness. When walking near any larger dogs always take caution. Most Pomeranians don’t know they are small because they have huge personalities. Large dogs can easily injure a tiny Pom with just one bite. We find it best to pick up a Pom when encountering a new large dog.
We always recommend learning puppy training techniques. There are many options available from local dog clubs, professional trainers, online learning and dog training classes available from places like Petsmart. Introductory puppy training classes are a great place for your puppy to socialize with other dogs. Your family learns from a professional trainer how to communicate with your puppy. These popular classes fill up quickly find the best option for your puppy and plan to register before your puppy comes home.
